Title: "Power Efficiency and Environmental Background of Natural Gas Substitution for Alter Native Fuels in Heat Engineering and Industry"
Abstract: The fundamentals proposed in this paper ensure the opportunity of reliable replacement the hydrocarbon fuels (mainly - natural gas NG) with accessible process fuels (derived or recovered gases, for example, of metallurgical production) or by renewable and local fuels, mainly - the biofuels and low-calorific (LCV) gases. New scientific and engineering fundamentals of fuels substitution have been advanced instead of obsolete methodology known as "Interchangeability of Fuel Gases" been developed in USA earlier and used from the middle of XX-th century or in addition to the proper generalizing criteria been collected in the previous approaches by fuels replacement. New up-to-date approaches for the fuel(s) substitution are more universal than previous ones and have energy and environmental background while the earlier ones are serving for domestic appliances from the standpoint of the combustion stability and burning completeness. Instead of traditional approach with the basic condition of conservation the heat flux introduced into the furnace by using of any fuel, the novel condition of conservation the useful heat absorbed by the furnace charge is proposed by author (B. Soroka). It means an assumption the condition of invariable flux of the useful total (chemical) enthalpy to be attained in case of fuel replacement and requires an account of the furnace (fuel utilization) efficiency. Besides mentioned statement this demand meets the condition of taking into account the 2nd thermodynamics law along with the 1st law. To perform the complex prediction of the opportunities and consequences of total or partial substitution of the necessary natural gas NG flow rate for alternative gases AG, the following parameters have been proposed for computations and taken into account: plant utilization efficiencies - regarding fuel and energy utilization, the last in form of heat ηH and exergy ηeff efficiencies; saving or overexpenditure of the NG flow rate in the gas mixture with AG, specific fuel consumption bf and specific issue of harmful substances Ct - pollutants in the combustion products: CNOx, CCO2 - as the toxic and greenhouse components respectively. Specific power (fuel) use bf and environmental Ct indices in this case are related to the unit of useful energy or to unit of the plant output. Certification procedure for alternative gas fuels and fuel mixtures as a commodity products has been developed with special computer code and is proceeding in frame of our approach with necessary set of characteristics, similar to those accepted in the world practice.
